Shut down your Officejet Pro 8710 printer and unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. Leave the fax machine to remain idle for one or two minutes.
Connect the printer power cable to the electrical socket again and turn on the printer. Use a telephone cable that has two wire leads. Do not use the telephone cord which has four wire leads. Use the original cable that came with the printer.
Connect the first end of the phone cable to the 1-LINE jack on the rear printer and the next end to the phone wall jack. If an answering machine is available, connect the machine and the 2-EXT jack on the back of the printer using a phone cable. With the help of answering you can be able to record voices without the noises from the fax messages.
Change your needed settings and preferences in the Fax Setup Wizard or Basic Fax settings window.
Add the fax header on the top your faxes. The fax header is nothing but the 10-digit fax telephone number or your business name.
Select the answer mode like a specified number of rings to pick up the phone call automatically and accept the incoming faxes.
Set the number of rings to answer the call. Use the Distinctive Ring to set up a unique ring pattern for some specified fax numbers.
Compare the type of your analog phone service with the tone or pulse. If the fax ring is different, the printer cannot detect the ring to answer the incoming phone call.
Set the fax volume to high to hear sounds for calls such as busy signals and dial tones. If you want silent faxing, set the volume to Off.
Run a fax test to confirm the successful setup.
Find the Fax Test Report or Run Fax test on the Setup menus in the control panel.
A report will be printed with the test reports and with instructions to resolve issues.
